Description :
Small town surrounded by beautiful moutain scenery, major historical site related to the Chinese revolution - packed with chinese tourists in the high season, very quite in the off season.

What to do : Walk in the mountains, visit chinese historical sites, go on a tour.

What you may not like : Crowds in summer, people wanting you to use their tours...

Where to stay ?
Turn left out of the bus station, then an immediate right, there is an abundance of hotels. In the off season should be able to bargain them down to about 30Y.

Where to eat ?  Anywhere along the same street, lots of good food at decent prices.

What to see/visit : Buy a map from the bus station, 3Y, covers the town and the county. See the dragon pools scenic area, ~6 hour trek along concrete/stone paths down into a valley to see waterfalls and pool, stunning views from the cliff sides. Lots of other walks in local mountains. Huangyangjie post where the red army had an important victory, and many other historical sites.

Itinerary advises: Tours not the best idea as orientated toward Chinese tourists, museums and historical sites only have chinese explanations. Better to get a minibus, a lot cheaper. On tours remember to add ~80Y to the quoted (transport price) for tickets.

How to come & leave ?

From Hengyang: Y47, sleeper bus, 12 hours, at 6:20 every day
To Ji'an: Y20, minibus, 3 hours, regularly

A long travelling time from anywhere large, but the scenery there and on the way is worth the time I think.
