CHEUNG CHAU ISLAND

"Long Island"

Description :  A small island with a bit of that charming Mediterranean atmosphere...

Comments : There is no traffic here but plenty of visitors and souvenirs shops so this is not the place to go if you are looking for a retreat... Still, it is a nice place to relax for half a day or so.

What to do : Watch fishermen trying to live the traditional way aboard wooden junks equipped with the latest gadgets / Walk the "Praya", the harbourside avenue now full of shops and restaurants / Become devout at the 200 years old Pak Tai Temple / During the Cheung Chau Bun Festival around May, photograph colorful "floating" children / Tour the old charming streets of the village with their traditional trades shops / Windsurf or swim at one of the public beach / Crawl the hideaway cave of the notorious pirate Cheung Po Tsai / Follow the path along the coast,...

What you may not like : The crowd on week end / The not so clean beaches / Not bringing a flashlight and having to rent one instead for a look at the tiny cave / The ugly concrete path along the coastline / The graffiti on some of the rocks / The limited walk possibilities / Not being able to eat seafood in full confidence,...

Where to stay ? An interesting option to relax while in HK would be to stay at Sea View Holiday Flats, 5mn away from the pier. Contacts : missking@hkseaview.com or fax 852-29868333 / Budget flat for two start at HK$120 during weekdays (HK$250 Saturdays and public holidays) or HK$200 with sea view (HK$400 WE). All flats are supposed to be equipped with shower, AC, TV, video player and basic cooking facilities. 20% discount if stay over a week. Apparently a new excellent bargain !
