What to do : Buy your train ticket hassle-free at the desk located in the soft-sleeper waiting room but open from 8:30 to 11:30 only / Climb a small mountain for a superb 360º view of the city and the forest / Attract Chinese people just by being there / Shop & eat

What you may not like : The unexplained cost difference between the official trains prices and what you are charged : Y140 instead of Y94 for No525 to Kunming. / The cost of accommodations / Being the center of attention

How long ? Half a day is enough to see what there is to see / one day to feel (and smell) the place

• Jinqiao Hotel (582 9953), Ruijin Zhonglu, Bus No 2 from Train Station / Dorm in a very nice "hotel like" 5 bed's room without bath cost 40Y. Rooms start at 220Y

• Ming Zhu Fandian (579 0518), the street on the right of the train station, 3mn walk / Noisy (train) but cheap and comfortable : Dble 110/120 (without negotiation)

• Sport Hotel (579 8777), up Zunyi Lu, next to the Guihou Gymnasium, 5mn walk / Excellent Dble for 140  (without negotiation) / A good restaurant next door

« Decided going to Xingyi by minibus (5.5 h, 95 Y): spectacular drive through karst mountains.

Xingyi: Panjiang Binguan (triple 95 Y, hw, br) very clean, taxi to bus station 3 Y good value. Nice modern city, unusually clean. Next to Maling Gorge (taxi 15 Y, entrance fee 30 Y a little steep) Bus back can be flagged down easily at crossroads (2 Y). Gorge is nice, but if the sky is clear Wanfeng Lake with karst hills might be the better choice. Taxi to railway station 30 Y / Train hard seat to kunming (5h,52 Y) / Bus to Xiaguan (6h, 104 Y, first 3h very rough road, because highway is still under construction, when completed trip should take only 4.5 h)

Xiaguan: Xiaguan Binguan (dbl,br,hw,very clean,English spoken 100 Y, rooms with sb looked really grubby) good value. Taxi to Dali 25 Y ,0.5 h (bus only 7 Y) »

The trip to Anshun : SS / 10Y / 2 hrs

I took a bus from the train station. Some would say that this was a bad move as it did not leave until (really) packed and took 2 hours to reach Anshun. But it was conveniently located, cost 10Y only and arrived directly at the bus stand for the Falls. Buses from the bus station are however supposed to be (a bit) faster, more comfortable and more regular in their schedules, but are they ?
