in particular during WE or holidays. Prices reach the sky at such time...

What you may not like : The overpriced accommodations / The ugly city / The tourism at the temple which make the visit anything but a spiritual experience / The entrance fees to the parks /

The cheapest place to stay is probably the Foreign Student Dormitory (795 1207) on Shuquang Lu, behind the Lingfeng Hotel (Bus No16 from Hubin Lu) : no dorm but Sgl & Dbl at reasonable prices.
More central, the Xihu Hotel (706 6933) is perfectly located next to the Lake. Various rooms are offered for around Y100 Sgl or Y150 Dbl without bathroom. Sadly, this is a good deal for Hangzhou.
Near the train station, next to the Main Post Office on Jiefang Lu, you can aldo check the Xinhua Hotel.

With three different bus stations, the situation is a bit confusing. Wulinmen Station deals with buses to Nanjing or Suzhou while the West Bus Station very logically deals with buses going east to Shaoxing, Ningbo or Shanghai.
If you do not wish to go to Putuoshan, an interesting option is to take the slow boat from Hangzhou to Suzhou up the Grand Canal. It leaves daily at 5:30pm and takes around 12 hours. You should be able to save on the normal cost of accommodation. The wharf is near the Wulinmen Station. There is also a boat to Wuxi.
Regular trains connect Hangzhou with Shanghai. Less regular trains are also available to Shaoxing & Ningbo.
